WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THIS CONFIDING CLEETHORPES HERON (UNLESS YOU'RE A FISH)?

Surveying its surroundings - the magnificent boating lake heron

A CONFIDING heron has this week been prompting  plenty of admiration at the boating lake in Cleethorpes.

The handsome bird has become something of a star attraction as it hunts for fish or other prey.

Herons seem to be on the increase in North East Lincolnshire where there are plenty of watery habitats - lakes, ponds, dykes and sometimes the coastal tideline.

Not infrequently, they also venture  on to farmland where they pounce on any passing rodents.

Herons were once killed for their meat, though, not surprisingly, this was found to be somewhat fishy in flavour.

Because of their powers of vision and hearing, melted fat from their bodies was even poured on to eyes or ears to enhance vision or alleviate deafness.

Dating back to Egyptian civilisations, when herons were credited with supernatural powers, it has always been regarded as a good omen to see a heron.

So, if you are fortunate to glimpse one - perhaps the bird at the boating lake - don't forget to buy a National Lottery ticket!

They went that way - I'm going this way
