It's a wind turbine - but not as you know it
A NEW type of onshore wind turbine could soon be appearing on a Grimsby industrial estate.
John Davison, of Technica Ltd, has submitted a planning application to install a pilot 22ft-high turbine at the firm's premises on Cherry Trees Business Park which is off Estate Road 5.
Initially, this is a research project involving the device's Florida-based manufacturer and the University of Lincoln.
But indications are that the turbine could be much more efficient than conventional blades-on-a-stalk in exploiting the energy of wind, even when it is blowing at low speeds.
What is more, it does not pose a collision threat to night-migrating songbirds which frequently come a cropper when they strike taller turbines.
If all goes well, the turbine - this is the first of its kind in the UK - could go into commercial manufacture, creating scores of skilled jobs and further enhancing Grimsby's renewable energy credentials.
Technica Ltd has an exclusivity agreement with the American manufacturer to sell and install these turbines across the UK.
It has also been the beneficiary of Local Enterprise Partnership regional growth funding.
The application is currently under consideration by North East Lincolnshire Council with a decision likely in the first quarter of next year.
