GRIMSBY MP INSISTS: IT IS IMPERATIVE WE TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR FISHING WATERS

Lia Nici: 'EU's requests are unreasonable'

MP Lia Nici was flying the flag for Grimsby in yesterday's important Commons debate on Britain's future relationship with the EU.

This is what she asserted: "The fishing communities in Grimsby are pleased that we have not accepted the EU’s unreasonable requests in the negotiations."

Ms Nici went on to ask the Prime Minister's representative, paymaster-general Peggy Mordaunt: "Does my right hon. Friend agree that any deal must allow us as a country to control who fishes in our waters?"

Ms Mourdant responded: "My hon. Friend makes a good point.

"I reassure her, as I have other hon. Members, that the Prime Minister knows what his responsibilities are, the expectation of the fishing industry and what is in the interests of this country."

Peggy Mourdant: 'PM know his responsibilities'

The Grimsby News says: It is commendable that Grimsby's MP took the time both to attend this important debate and to make a contribution. However, she needs to sharpen her focus. What does she mean by Grimsby's "fishing communities"? Do we actually have any? Or is she using the term sloppily also to embrace  the fish-processing industry? If she is confident a new future beckons for fishing out of Grimsby, what is she doing to secure improvements to the port infrastructure? And how is she seeking to resolve tensions between fishermen and the windfarm operators who increasingly  rule the roost in our inshore waters? Come the New Year, Ms Nici needs to come up with a detailed manifesto on the way forward post-Brexit.
