SPRUCE-UP WORK TO START NEXT WEEK ON TOP TOWN'S PROBLEM-PLAGUED BUS STANDS

Cllr Ron Shepherd - getting to grips with bus stands

HERE'S hoping it doesn't rain next week - especially for those wanting to catch a bus at Grimsby's Riverhead Exchange.

Some of the shelters will be out of bounds between Monday and Thursday to allow maintenance works at  bus stands C, D, E and F.

Fire damage was uncovered when the bus stop seating was removed earlier in the year because of recurring loutishness from ne'er-do-wells.

North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, Engie have issued the following statement: "We are continuing to look at alternatives for refurbishment of the front benches.

"We are also working with partners to  address behaviour issues."

Further comment has come from Cllt Ron Shepherd, who is NELC's portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities.

Says he: "The area has been subject to groups of street drinkers gathering and causing intimidation towards members of the public waiting for a bus, glass getting stuck in the wooden bench slats and rubbish accumulating at the back of the benches.

“Council workers have continued to engage with groups that congregate, clean the benches and to remove any potential hazards, but it has become a recurring issue which is deemed unreasonable for the public.

“This is why we initially decided to remove some of the benches, with the public’s safety and comfort being of paramount importance.

"By doing this, staff  uncovered the fire damage which will be remedied during these works.

"To allow the works to be completed at each stand and to ensure the safety of passengers and those completing the works, each stand will be temporarily unavailable while works are carried out.

"People will still be able to catch the bus, but will temporarily not be able to use the shelters or to sit down."

It is hoped all stands will be  fully refurbished by some time on Thursday.
