WHY DID COUNCIL REJECT SENSIBLE POLICE SUGGESTION FOR GRIMSBY LIBRARY?

Police believe hardened glass - as seen at this shop in Sweden - would be preferable to roller shutters

IT would be wiser to install hardened glass rather than a roller shutter outside Grimsby Central Library.

So say Humberside police who have warned North East Lincolnshire Council against proceeding with it roller shutter proposal outside the front entrance of this important town centre building.

The police acknowledge that NELC wants to exclude antisocial behaviour from occurring on  the outside of the premises, but it thinks the authority is going the wrong way about it - and may even make the situation worse.

Says police crime reduction officer Marc Dias: "Roller shutters can be the subject f damage and graffiti."

He goes on to  suggest that an alternative, less unattractive, option should be explored - that of using hardened glass of the sort seen outside travel centres and shops in many towns and cities.

Whether NELC will rethink its shutter proposal  in response to the police observation  remains to be seen.

Yuk! The council's preference for library - roller shutters

The Grimsby News says NELC would do well to adopt the police  suggestion, thereby demonstrating to the community that it cares about the appearance not just of the library but also of the wider conservation area. The council itself has already acknowledged that shutters will despoil an important building - one that is both much used and much seen. So why its stubborn adherence to shutters? Instead of despoiling the library, why not enhance it?
