CLEETHORPES MP UNHAPPY AT 'ILL-ADVISED' NEW QUICKIE-DIVORCE PROPOSAL

Mr Vickers: marriage offers  'protective fence'

A BILL which is likely to lead to a speedier divorce process is being opposed by  Cleethorpes MP Marin Vickers.

The measure - which is due to have its Second Reading in the 'Commons later today - will allow divorce by sole application on a no-fault basis.

The proposal is intended to reduce conflict (or boredom) in marriage, but Mr Vickers believes it will undermine the longstanding principle of "commitment".

He is one of eight MPs who have signed a letter of objection which has been published in today's edition of The Daily Telegraph.

The letter says of the Bill: "It could not be more ill-advised or badly timed.

"Our constituents are experiencing the greatest social upheaval since the Second World War, with many otherwise durable marriages and civil relationships under intense Corvid-related strain."

The Cleethorpes MP believes the focus should be not on making divorce easier but on encouraging conflict resolution and reconciliation to maintain a "protective fence" for many relationships that are likely to be "saveable".

The letter continues: "Ministers say no-fault divorce will reduce conflict, but the pain of a marriage unilaterally ended can last for a lifetime.

"This proposal sends a destabilising and deeply insensitive signal which will be amplified by these intensely troubled times.

"It should be dropped now."

Also signatories to the letter are two other Lincolnshire MPs - Edward Leigh and Sir John Hayes.
