SLY FLY-TIPPER PUT YOUNG CLEETHORPES COUPLE IN AN EMBARRASSING POSITION

Blight on the countryside - fly-tipped waste is a borough-wide problem

SPARE a thought for an entirely innocent Cleethorpes couple who, late last week, received an unwelcome knock on the door from police.

They were told that their contact details had been identified on waste material illegally dumped in a quiet corner of the borough.

It emerged that, in good faith, the couple had unwarily accepted an offer  from a fly-tipper to dispose of their unwanted material at a site or premises called "Coates".

At £60, the rate was much less expensive than paying £120 for hire of a skip

Following the police visit,  the couple - parents of two young children - had the good grace to collect their dumped waste (some of which had since been burned) and take it home.

They then phoned their contractor who - surprise, surprise -  was less than contrite.

"There must be some misunderstanding," he replied.

The upshot of the unsavoury incident?

It is not yet known if the police - or NELC - have been made aware of  the fly-tipper's details and what action, if any, might ensue.

In the meantime,  a council spokesman comments: "We all have a legal obligation, or duty of care, to make sure our waste is disposed of correctly.

"The best way to stop organised fly-tipping is to make sure that only authorised waste carriers take your waste away.

"The simplest way to check is to ask for their carrier licence number and visit the Environment Agency’s waste carrier register."

NELC has signed up to the SCRAP campaign, part of a nationwide crackdown against fly-tipping.

SCRAP stands for:

Suspect ALL waste carriers,
