HOME SECRETARY'S PAT ON THE BACK FOR CLEETHORPES MP MARTIN VICKERS

ONE of the most senior members of the Government has praised Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers as "a leader and figurehead" in his community and constituency.

The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, sounded the plaudit for Mr Vickers during a Commons debate in the wake of Black Lives Matter demonstrations - including one in Cleethorpes - on Saturday.

This was the exchange between the duo:

Martin Vickers: "I welcome the approach that the Home Secretary has outlined during recent days and the robust approach she has taken, and I thank her for speaking with me on Friday ahead of the protest march that took place in Cleethorpes.

"Thankfully, that passed off without severe incident, but, nevertheless, the very fact that these marches are taking place at a time when social distancing rules are still in place causes unnecessary anxiety, particularly to the elderly and vulnerable.

"Will she give an assurance that she will continue to work with the police, local authorities and others to ensure that those protest marches are deterred and do not take place?"

Priti Patel: "I thank my hon. Friend for the way in which he has been addressing this issue locally, as a leader and figurehead in his community and constituency.

"It is incumbent on us all to continue to make the case that we are in the midst of a public health emergency, and people’s lives are at risk from mass gatherings and participating in protests.

"It is right that every agency -the police, police and crime commissioners, MPs, the NHS and local authorities -comes together  continually to reiterate that message.

"I commend my hon. Friend for the work he is doing locally."
