ARMED FORCES CHAMPION'S PLEA TO COMMUNITY: LET'S KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE!

Gone but not forgotten - the  sounds and sights of last year's event

A CALL has come for local people to 'celebrate' Armed Forces Weekend even though, because of lockdown,  this will have to be mostly done in private

Armed Forces Day Flag will  be raised at the Remembrance Gate in Cleethorpes Monday 22 June in readiness for the weekend itself - June 26-28.

But that's about it - there will be no public events to compare with the extravaganzas of previous years.

Says Alex Baxter, who is managing director of the Cleethorpes-based AFMET(Armed Forces Major Events Team): "We still urge the people of North East Lincolnshire to celebrate and remember, in their own way, both serving personnel and veterans.

"Although we may not be able to come together physically to mark the occasion, there are to celebrate at home.”

Ideas include:

* Hosting a virtual celebration with friends and family via video chat, or even an Armed Forces themed quiz. (Remember to share your photos with @armedforcesday by using #ArmedForcesDay on your posts).

* Saluting - #SaluteOurForces is a simple way for people to pay tribute to the British Armed Forces community for their hard work, dedication and efforts to and keep us safe in the UK and across the globe. To join in, simply send a photo or video of yourself or your friends and colleagues saluting. Find out how to submit your images at www.armedforcesday.org.uk/get-involved/saluteourforces

* If you know someone in the Armed Forces community - whether they’re currently serving or a veteran, you could send them a message or give them a call to show your support for the work they do.

* You can join in and fly your own Armed Forces Day flag, bunting, hand-wavers, or banners. Search “Armed Forces Day Flag” on your  search engine to find your options.

Ends Mr Baxter: "Should circumstances allow, we hope to come back bigger and better next year."

* Below is a selection of photographs from previous years.
