HUGE HAUL OF ILLICIT CIGARETTES SEIZED FROM PREMISES IN GRIMSBY'S FREEMAN STREET

Likelihood is that the cigarettes and baccy will be destroyed

ALMOST 300,000 illicit cigarettes and 2,615 pouches of illicit tobacco have been seized from premises in Grimsby.

Trading Standards and police officers swooped on a shop in Freeman Street and on nearby houses and flats.

A car was also targeted.

The seized products are said to have have a street value of £103,575.

Four people were arrested and three cars were seized during the operation which took place last Tuesday.

Says Cllr Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities at North East Lincolnshire Council: "The intended sale price of seized cigarettes is often less than half the cost of legal tobacco.

"This not only undermines health initiatives to reduce the number of people who smoke but also impacts legitimate businesses.

"Those involved readily undercut legitimate businesses and don’t care whom they sell to, including children."

The swoop mirrors another recent operation at at house in Healing.
