The Knoll at 11am |
THE celebrations may mostly have been low-key but hundreds of homes across Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Immingham and adjacent villages marked the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe.
In gardens and on streets across the borough, there was bunting galore, flag-waving, 40s-style music and refreshments.
Because of coronavirus, social distancing was essential, but, in the afternoon sunshine. people were still able to get in the mood.
Earlier in the day, there was a two minutes' silence for those who lost their lives in the 1939-45 conflict. It was fitting that they should have been solemnly remembered for paying the ultimate sacrifice.
At 9pm tonight, VE spotlights are due to beam into the darkness, a further reflection of how, through blood, toil, sweat and tears, tyranny was vanquished.
Below are scenes from Cleethorpes this morning as householders prepared to celebrate that famous day of victory on May 8, 1945.
