PLANNING GREEN LIGHT FOR CONVERSION OF CLEETHORPES GUEST HOUSE TO BEDSITTERS

Carlton House - no more holiday guests

CLEETHORPES is set to lose another of its guesthouses.

North East Lincolnshire Council planners have this week approved change of use of Carlton House, 14 Isaacs Hill, to a house in multiple occupation.

The property will be internally revamped to provide eight bedsitters, seven of them with en suite shower facilities.

It is understood the kitchen will be shared.

The firm behind the redevelopment proposal is Caden Homes Ltd which specialises in investing and renting out properties in North East Lincolnshire.

Up until recently, the property has been on the market at £150,000 with Crofts Estate Agents whose sales literature described the property as "a superb investment opportunity for a savvy business person".

Meanwhile, a similar conversion fate beckons for the Oyo Hotel MJ - formerly known as Hotel 77 - on Kingsway, Cleethorpes.

An application to change the use of the seafront-facing property to seven self-contained apartments is currently under consideration in NELC's planning department.

This seafront hotel has been earmarked for conversion to apartments

The Grimsby News says: There is no reason to think that either of these refurbishment projects will not be carried out to the highest standards. However, ongoing loss of holiday accommodation chips away at Cleethorpes' reputation and status as a welcoming seaside holiday resort. We think NELC should amend its planning policy so there is a presumption against such conversions. This would put it in line with other seaside towns, such as Skegness, where hotels and guesthouses are protected almost as if they were sacred temples.
