IT'S GRIMSBY'S MOST PROMINENT CLOCK - SO WHY DOES IT REMAIN BROKEN?

Magnificent but forgotten - the clock on the tower

A NEW plea has come for the clock at St James Church in Grimsby to be restored to working order.

An arm and a leg - almost £2-million - is being spent on upgrading St James Square, but,  the clock in the minister is, alas, the poor relation.

It has all but been forgotten.

At a scrutiny panel meeting, Cllr Tim Mickleburgh called for it to be returned to working order.

"The clock is located in a prominent place, so why is it out of action?" he demanded. "It creates a very poor impression among residents and visitors alike."

The councillor's comments appeared to catch  James Trowsdale, the officer in charge of the St James Square revamp, on the hop.

"I will check and write to you," he said.

The magnificent church in a bygone era

The Grimsby News says: Cllr Mickleburgh is right to be dismayed about the famous clock. It is extraordinary that neither the churchfolk nor council officials think it to be of any consequence that it remains broken. Have they no pride in the heritage of the town? The clock should be returned to working order as a matter of urgency.
