DECISION LOOMS ON PLAN TO CONVERT FORMER GRIMSBY CLUB TO CO-OP SUPERMARKET

A DECISION could be made next week on a controversial plan to convert the former Conservative club in Grimsby to a small supermarket.

The recommendation to a North East Lincolnshire Council planning meeting is that the proposal for the premises at 36 Bargate should be refused.

The property - a former villa - is in a poor state of repair and crying out for renovation and a new use.

A convenience store, most likely a Co-op, would also be very handy of nearby residents who prefer not to make a trip to the town centre for their provisions.

But conversion would result in the loss of many internal period features, including the fine staircase.

It would also create traffic hold-ups and possibly danger, especially when HGVs are delivering supplies.

As part of the same scheme, there would also be a red-brick extension, the modern clean lines of which would contrast with the classic design of the former villa but would equally retain traditional proportions and dimensions which would connect it to the original building.

The car park and landscape design would probably also enhance the appearance of the site within the surrounding area, and most of the mature trees would be retained.

Councillors will debate the pros and cons at a planning meeting on Wednesday July 22.
