HOPES THAT VILLAGE PROBE WILL UNEARTH PRICELESS TREASURES FROM YESTERYEAR?

The Grove - could  construction yield  heritage assets?

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to extend a Waltham care home has been given the planning go-ahead - but only so long as an archaeological survey is carried out prior to construction.

This condition has been imposed on Peterborough-based Country Court Care in advance of a scheme that will involve the demolition of an existing bungalow at The Grove, off Ings Lane, in favour of two new extensions - one of a single storey and one of two storeys.

The application was opposed - but unsuccessfully - by the parish council which is concerned that potential loss of parking space will lead to displaced cars, notably those of staff and visitors, being
parked in the village.

Also of concern is that the development might imperil a much-cherished beech tree.

In granting consent, North East Lincolnshire planners noted a report which states: "This development site is within the medieval settlement of Waltham.

"Any development here is likely to disturb archaeological finds and features which could contribute to our knowledge of Waltham during this period.

"It is acknowledged that this site has been partially disturbed, but  an archaeological scheme of monitoring and recording will be the appropriate level of intervention to record any  surviving heritage assets."

The developers will also be required to supply a plan indicating how they intend to ensure no loss of habitat for birds and other creatures.
