NELC leader: Rejig of Cleethorpes Market Place will represent 'exciting opportunity' for Cleethorpes

But where will our customers park? Some Market Place traders fear business will be hit by car-unfriendly  revamp

A CRUNCH meeting is to be held between  traders and North East Lincolnshire Council over plans to  revamp Cleethorpes Market Place.

Although a series of public consultations seem to indicate enthusiasm for the plans, business owners fear the reduction of parking places will reduce takings.

At this week's meeting of NELC's cabinet, Cllr Stan Shreeve committed to a meeting on a date to be fixed in the hope of thrashing out the differences.

"The traders have accepted that parking will be lost in the centre of the market place, but there are other issues - for instance to do with vehicular ingress and exit."

On the plus side, he maintained that Sainsburys - the largest business - was "entirely happy" with the scheme.

Cllr Steve Harness said the proposal - which will be funded by monies from Whitehall - represented a "fantastic opportunity".

Also speaking in favour was Cllr Stewart Swinburn who commented: "People don't always like change, but we have listened to what they have to say."

Leader of the council Cllr Philip Jackson described the proposed revamp as "an exciting opportunity for Cleethorpes".

He continued: "It will help us both to attract tourists and improve the offering for local people.

"It will put the town firmly on track to be an all-year resort."
