All options open - Lia Nici ponders her future as likely poll defeat stares Tories in the face

When one door closes, another opens - Lia Nici is upbeat about her future

LIA Nici has made no decisions about her future should she fail to be re-elected for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

"I will sit down with my team, and we’ll take it from there," she said as, at 2am today, she awaited the poll result for her constituency.

Ms Nici, who once famously described politics as for ‘weirdos’, said she was unsure whether she would stay politically involved.

Prior to becoming an MP, she served briefly as a member of North East Lincolnshire Council, one of three representatives for Scartho.

But local government might seem a bit of a come-down for a woman who, for seven months, was parliamentary private secretary to Boris Johnson when he was Prime Minister, and later served as a Government whip, then as a Levelling-up minister.

She revealed that she had been approached by "one or two businesses" about working for them post-election.

But she would also consider resuming her former freelance career in video production.

Asked why she thought the Conservative Government had become so unpopular, she pinpointed dissension within the ranks and a series of leadership changes.

"That’s one off the reason why voters  have given us a kicking at the ballot box," she declared.

Locally she maintained Boris Johnson still enjoyed "overwhelming support".

In Grimsby and Cleethorpes, she said the  Conservatives would be leaving “a valuable legacy”.

Ms Nici, for 22 years a lecturer at Grimsby Institute, added: "Now it is up to our young people to gain NVQs and take up apprenticeships.

"Pretty buildings count for nothing - if the area is to continue to move forward, it is skills that count."
