Case of mistaken identity - contrary to report, seal found under pier is probably as happy as Larry

A sad end for this seal pup - but it was not the same animal  that was discovered snoozing under Cleethorpes pier on January 2

ON January 12, we published a report suggesting that a seal pup found asleep under Cleethorpes pier may have perished  just hours after having being shepherded back to the sea by volunteers supported by Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue.

This is not the case.

Although a dead seal pup was found further down the beach the next morning, it did not carry the dye marking that had been applied to the creature found under the pier.

They were different animals.

Our report may inadvertently have given the false impression that there had been negligence in allowing the seal found under the pier to return to the sea before having been given appropriate care and medication.

We are happy to clarify the position and wish Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue continued success with their valuable and greatly-appreciated work.
