SEAFRONT GUESTHOUSE SET TO BECOME THREE SERVICED APARTMENTS

Sherwood - soon to be a guesthouse no longer

A PLAN to convert a guesthouse on Cleethorpes seafront to three apartments has been approved.

North East Lincolnshire Council has this week rubber-stamped the application by Mr Da Silva of Silverlake Serviced Apartments to change the use of Sherwood, a terraced property,  at  15 Kingsway.

To the rear, the garden is being 'amended' to create two parking bays, private garden space for two units and a bin/recycling store.

Changes to the existing building fabric will be minimal, but there will be a new bay window on the second storey.

In his report,  planning case officer Jonathan Cadd notes: "The flats are to be leasehold and are likely to be let out to longer term contractors on the Humber Bank with the freeholder providing cleaning and maintenance services

"Given the present situation, however, this may not be possible, and, if necessary, the flats will be let on a permanent basis, leaving occupiers to occupiers walk to the rear of the property to access bins.

"Whilst not ideal it is only a short walk around the back via Rowston Street to access the bins."

The Grimsby News says: This decision by planners is understandable but regrettable. In some seaside towns, hotels and guesthouses are regarded almost as protected species because of their importance to tourism. Cleethorpes already has relatively little of this sort of holiday accommodation - with this decision, it is likely to have even less.  For the sake of tourism, North East Lincolnshire Council needs to amend its planning policy with a view to safeguarding  these  sorts of premises.
