DOES EARLY ARRIVAL OF SNOW BUNTINGS FORETELL COLDER DAYS AHEAD?

Snow bunting - all the way from Siberia to spend winter in Cleethorpes

SNOW buntings are uncommon birds in most parts of the UK, but they regularly turn up on beaches in Cleethorpes and Humberston in frosty weather.

This winter, the first birds have arrived early - today. Is this an omen of a cold snap ahead?

Snow buntings are about the same size as house sparrows and feed on the tideline, pecking for seeds and insects in seaweed.

A few pairs breed in the Cairngorms mountain range, but those seen locally are most likely to have come from far more northerly climes such as northern Norway or Siberia.
