A NEW beauty and therapy salon is in prospect for Humberston.
North East Lincolnshire Council has this week approved an application for a garage storage shed to be converted to provide various make-you-feel-good services.
These include, for instance, nail painting, facials, waxing, make-up, lashes, pedicures, Indian head massage and hair-ups.
It is thought most of the clients at the six-days-a-week operation will be female, with only one at a time.
The premises are at 130 Grimsby Road - close to the Wilton Road roundabout - and therapies will be by appointment only.
Time was when it was very difficult for applicants to set up businesses in their gardens for fear of inconvenience to neighbours, but, in recent years, NELC planners have adopted a more permissive approach so long as the proposed activities do not generate significant noise, smell or parking nuisance to neighbours.
To be on the safe side, the initial planning consent is for 12 months only to see how things go, but the applicant - Ms Johnson - will be able to apply for it to be renewed.
In his report, planning officer Joathan Cadd states: "The nature of the use is such that very limited noise, equipment or activities would occur that would be likely to lead to significant nuisance from within the actual treatment building which is a detached brick built structure to the bottom of the garden.
"This detached structure is also positioned within a garden where 1.8-metre high fences surround it, further screening neighbours from activity.
"Despite the close proximity of neighbours, the nature of the use is such that with the use of an appointment system would be deemed sufficient to protect neighbours."
He continues: "The single parking space would be positioned to the front of the property which could lead to nuisance.
"However given the nature of Grimsby Road at this point, and its proximity to Wilton Road, the fronts of properties at 132 and 128 are already subject to substantial noise from passing traffic reducing the impact of noise and nuisance from visitor parking.
"At the time of the site visit it appeared that a private vehicle was parked on the verge which could also cause nuisance to neighbours if customers were to use this area.
"The applicant has confirmed, however, that a space would be available on the actual property and this should be conditioned to reduce nuisance."
Mr Cadd concludes: "The proposed use would, in a small way, enhance the economy of North East Lincolnshire."
