Snookered! Lincolnshire artist's autographed watercolour of Steve Davis was saleroom flop

Star at the snooker table - not so much so in the saleroom

A WATERCOLOUR study colour of snooker ace Steve Davis failed to sell at an auction in Louth.

The pre-sale estimate from John Taylors was that the painting - by acclaimed Lincolnshire artist Colin Carr - would fetch between £80 and £150.

Carr, who died in 2002, was a former student at Grimsby Art College who is better known for his depiction of Grimsby townscapes and trawlers.

But there was scant interest either within the saleroom or from internet bidders, so the 1982 painting was withdrawn.

Although the sale overall was successful, there were some other disappointments.

Also withdrawn after failing to meet its reserve price was a lot featuring almost 400 vintage postcards depicting scene of bygone Cleethorpes and Grimsby.

On the plus side, a large collection of eggcups managed to achieve the princely sum of  . . . £12.
