Peter Handyside - classy defender will be remembered fondly |
THERE was deep sadness at Blundell Park today after news came through that former defender Peter Handyside had died aged 49.
Peter moved to Blundell Park from his native Scotland in 1990 and, after progressing through the club's youth system, he went on to feature over 200 times for the club between 1992 and 2001.
In a statement, the club said: "Our thoughts are with Peter’s family at this sad time."
"A classy defender, Peter was a regular in the Mariners backline throughout the 90s.
"He was an integral part of Alan Buckley’s team that, in season 1997-98, achieved an historic Wembley double - promotion to the Football League and the Football League Trophy.
The next stage of Peter's career took him to Stoke City where he became captain, then to Barnsley.
Before retiring, aged 33, at the end of the 2006-07 season, he also had spells with Northwich Victoria and Hucknall Town.
In more recent times, he had worked as a delivery driver for a furniture retailer in Stoke-on-Trent, but it is thought he had, in recent times, returned north of the border to Dumfries where he grew up.
The cause of his death is not known.
