Oh no, not another delay! Will makeover of Grimsby's Riverhead Square ever be completed?

Another day, another hold-up - revamp of Riverhead Square was supposed to have been comleted by spring last year

WORK  to create the new public space in Grimsby's Riverhead Square, has been put on hold, and part of the site has been temporarily closed.

According to  North East Lincolnshire Council, there have been "unavoidable delays in the supply of natural stone for the seating".

It seems stone was available - and some may have been installed  - but it was later found to be of sub-standard quality.

Following discussions between the supplier, Marshalls, and the project's main contractors, CR Reynolds, work has been paused.

Told of the problem, NELC leader Cllr Philip Jackson was reportedly 'livid'.

Whether this is true the Grimsby News has been unable to ascertain, but, if so, he calmed down sufficiently to issue a diplomatic statement.

Said he: "While this is disappointing, some things we just can’t foresee -  and nature is one of them.

"We are pleased that Marshall’s quality control process identified the issue sooner rather than later.

"We will obviously be working with the suppliers for the stone to be delivered so that we can open the square fully as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Halifax-based Marshalls have issued an  apology - accompanied by a somewhat wishy-washy explanation.

Their statement reads: "Stone is a natural product, and its quality can change quickly depending on numerous factors.

"Thanks to our strict quality controls, we were able to swiftly identify the issue, using our product reserves to keep the project moving in the short term.

"Reassuringly, whilst any quarry can experience a period of unexpected poor quality, it is rare that it lasts a long time.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these unexpected and unavoidable delays and remain focused on resolving the issue.

"We are in close communication with the council to ensure they remain up to date on our progress."
