INVASION OF BRAMBLE THREATENS TO UNDERMINE AMBITIOUS WILD FLOWER PROJECT ON CLEETHORPES FORESHORE

Will the bramble prove to be more troublesome than sea buckthorn

AN attempt to encourage more wild flowers to bloom on the Cleethorpes foreshore nature reserve seems to have backfired.

In winter, Natural England and North East Lincolnshire Council were jointly involved in a campaign to eradicate much of the sea buckthorn as part of the Dynamic Dunes initiative.

But instead of wild flowers, it is bramble - even more invasive than buckthorn -  that has now colonised much of the reserve.

It is true that orchids are again flowering, but even their numbers are fewer than this time last year.

On the plus side, the bramble could prove a boon for nesting whitethroats and other songbirds, plus pollinating insects, but that was not the object of the exercise.

The two organisations will now have to decide whether to allow the bramble to grow and flourish or whether, at cost, it needs to be eradicated just like the sea buckthorn it replaced.

Orchids are flowering but in fewer numbers than last year
