FORMER TRAWLERMEN TO BE HONOURED AT 'FISHCAKE BUSTERS' REUNION

Heritage Centre gathering will honour those who risked their lives at sea

FORMER from across North East Lincolnshire will be recognised at a reunion evening to be held at Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre next week.

Organised by the centre and The Fishermen’s Mission, it is hoped that up to 150 former trawlermen will attend the event on Thursday 16 June, between 6pm and 10pm, to celebrate the vital part they played in Great Grimsby’s fishing industry.

Guests will have exclusive use of the centre for the evening and will enjoy music and free food and refreshments.

Says Cllr Tom Furneaux, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and the visitor economy: "I am very pleased this evening is returning once again to honour those who risked their lives at sea.

"Their part in the history and prosperity of this town is immense.”

Adds David Ornsby, operations manager at the centre: "We are delighted that the reunions have been such a success and that the strong relationship we have forged with the Fishermen’s Mission has enabled such a special event for our local fishermen to take place.

"The Trawlermen’s Night highlights that the centre is here for them and has people that think of them and respect their efforts.

"We are also very pleased to have support of the firm, Docks Beers, who have supplied discounted refreshments for the event."

Another firm, Alfred Enderby’s, will be supplying fishcakes on the evening, so guests will be able to tuck into a Fishcake Buster, a term used back in the fishing days for a bun.

A limited number of tickets are available for the event from the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre.

Call (01472) 323345 for details. Proof of involvement in the fishing industry will be required when collecting tickets.

Free entry to local ex-trawlermen has existed for many years at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre and they are always welcome.
