THOUGHT TO MEASURE 10 FEET - THE DEAD PYTHON FOUND DUMPED ON GRIMSBY STREET

Although it is dead, staff are reluctant to unravel the beast

A DEAD python has been found among discarded rubbish in a Grimsby street.

Street cleaners found the deceased reptile - thought to be an Albino Burmese python - on Monday morning.

It was hidden among some bin bags left by a hedge at the corner of Thorold Street and Park Street.

Burmese pythons are among the largest snakes in the world and the specimen they found felt very heavy.

Because rigor mortis has set in, it has remained coiled, but it is believed to be  at least 10 feet long.

Says North East Lincolnshire Council's deputy street cleansing manager, John Munson: "The  job is full of surprises, but this was a total shock for our team.

"You don’t turn up for work on a Monday morning expecting to find a massive snake dumped behind a hedge.

"None of us have plucked up the courage to fully unravel it, but it looks huge and weighs a fair bit."

It is not known how long the snake had been there, but it is most likely a household pet that has died and been dumped.

Cllr Ron Shepherd, NELC's portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, comments: "We are keen to speak to the snake’s owner so we can find out more about how it came to be fly-tipped in Grimsby.

"Someone must know where it came from - we all have a legal obligation, or duty of care, to make sure our waste is disposed of correctly.

"If you have any information, please report it in confidence at www.nelincs.gov.uk/flytipping."

It is not known if Monty will be given his final farewell at the new pets-only cremation unit at Grimsby Cemetery or if he will undergo a less dignified means of disposal.
