THE cafe at the Sainsbury's superstore in Grimsby is to close next month.
It is one of 200 nationwide that are to suffer a similar fate.
Instead, the chain intends to partner with other companies to offer customers eat-in, takeaway and home-delivered hot food and drink.
The decision is certain to be a big blow to staff and customers at the Grimsby store.
The company announced this week that it also intends to close less popular hot food counters in 34 stores and simplify the way it runs its bakeries in 54 stores.
It is not known if this additional 'rationalisation' will also hit Grimsby.
Says Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive: "We are totally focused on improving what we can deliver for our customers and at the same time, working hard to make our business simpler.
"We are really excited about this new customer offer we will be rolling out over the next two to three years across many of our stores.
"We must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices."
In future, if customers want to continue to enjoy the Sainsbury's in-house cafe experience (its toasted tea cakes are very popular), they will have to travel to the Lincoln branch or one of the other 66 stores (listed below) where the cafes will remain open:
