CONTROVERSIAL PLAN FOR NEW CONVENIENCE STORE REFUSED BY COUNCIL PLANNERS

An uncertain future beckons for the site of the former car dealership

PLANNERS have refused a proposal to allow a convenience store and one other shop to be built on the empty site of a former commercial garage in Cleethorpes.

At today's meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council's planning committee, councillors voted 8-3 against the application.

If approved, it is understood the new store would have accommodated a Co-op.

The scheme for 223 - 225 Humberston Road generated huge local controversy, with many residents commenting - either in favour or against - in submissions to NELC.

After debate, the committee came down in support of the planning officers' caution that to allow a new store would undermine the vitality of the nearby shops on Humberston Road and North Sea Lane.

Commented Cllr David Hasthorpe: "As has often been said, when one shop opens another closes.

"The negatives of this proposal outweigh the positives."

A different perspective came from Cllr Henry Hudson who claimed that other shops in the area were "not doing a particularly good job" for which reason he would not use them.

"This is an opportunity to have a really good well-stocked store,"he insisted. "It would be an asset to the community."

Cllr Matthew Patrick claimed that many of the residents' letters of objection had been 'samey'.

"If there was a shop, they would all be able to buy their own pen,"he quipped.

It is not known if the Co-op - or its agents - will appeal against the decision.
