The Garth Lane site - work due to start on Monday |
It had been feared that the revamp of the derelict Garth Lane site might be delayed until summer - or later - because of the coronavirus situation.
But North East Lincolnshire Council are able to forge ahead because the contractors, C.R. Reynolds, are committed to taking all necessary safety and hygiene precautions.
The initial eight-week phase of the £3.5-million waterfront project will get underway on the Freshney Place side of Frederick Ward Way.
Existing traffic signals at the junction will be replaced with temporary lights during the work, and alternative pedestrian crossing locations will be provided for what little foot-traffic there currently is.
Control measures will be in place in accordance with national advice from the construction sector and central Government to ensure worker safety.
These will include social distancing rules, special travel and welfare arrangements and the cleansing of equipment and vehicles.
Once this phase is complete, the situation will be assessed as to when the main bulk of the project can start.
Says NELC's cabinet member for regeneration Cllr John Fenty: “The work here will form a vital part of the complete redevelopment of the Garth Lane area
"This is a key and historic part of our town centre, and our aim is to reflect that in the work we are doing.”

The Grimsby News says: This is excellent news. The fact that work will proceed next week reflects well on NELC, its regeneration partner, Engie, and the contractors, C.R. Reynolds. Despite the challenges thrown up by coronavirus, all involved with the project are determined not to let the grass grow under their feet. This can-do-and-will-do attitude will surely serve as a real morale-booster for the rest of the community.
