An initiative aimed at breathing new life into the premises was not liked by neighbours |
A PLAN to convert a popular Cleethorpes social club to a delicatessen and pub-restaurant has been pulled.
The proposal to revamp The Kingsway on the seafront generated controversy from the moment it was announced.
Today, North East Lincolnshire Council revealed that the planning application submitted by agents acting for Brett Smith has been formally withdrawn.
The property at 3 Kingsway is currently occupied by the Liberal Democrat party on the ground floor and a members' club on the first floor.
There is limited external space with the entrances opening straight on to the footpath.
At the rear, there is an escape staircase with bin storage.
Under the scheme, there would have been a substantial remodelling of the premises.
The existing ground floor office would have been reconfigured to provide an office and new deli/bar.
The first-floor member’s club would have been been converted to provide a public bar and restaurant.
But the project sparked numerous objection, not least from neighbours, about the likelihood of noise and other nuisance.
On resident wrote: "I feel the area is getting saturated with more and more places which can cause noise and extra traffic late at night.
"We have a lot of pensioners and disabled in this area and adding to late-night traffic right outside people's windows will cause anxiety.
"If an area becomes over-saturated with late-night traffic, shops will have to be shuttered as windows will be broken."
Another submitted this comment: "As a resident of Cleethorpes for all my life, the amount of pubs that have a risen in the last few years is beyond belief.
"How many more are the council going to allow?
"They are now creeping into the residential areas of the resort which hard-working and elderly people do not wish to be a part of.
"The amount of inebriated people staggering across roads is quite frankly a disgrace."
The correspondent continued:" The Kingsway Club has always been a friendly club, offering elderly residents, many with no family, a safe haven and company.
"Keep Cleethorpes a nice resort - please don't ruin it with more pubs creeping into the residential area!"
The applicant now has the option of submitting a revised application or of stepping away completely in order to concentrate on his other Cleethorpes interests.
