Petition plea to former PM: You don’t support Grimsby Town, Mr Johnson, so don’t wear the hat!

The hat was seen on the front page of The Daily Telegraph when Mr Johnson wore it at a rally in London

BORIS Johnson’s insistence on wearing a Grimsby Town FC woolly hat when he appears in public is riling many town residents big time.

Not least of these is Mariners fan John Dale who has started a petition urging him to desist.

It states:

Johnson has no formal connection to the club. He has never lived in Grimsby.

He is using the town to add lustre and glamour to his own shattered life. He is also bringing Grimsby into serious disrepute.

This petition asks that Johnson stops wearing the hat.".

The GTFC hat is one of two given to the Prime Minister by Grimsby MP Lia Nici.

It is thought he wears them to portray the man-of-the-people quirkiness that helped him to triumph at the last General Election.

He wore his favourite of the two at an anti-Semitism rally in London last month, then again as he arrived to give evidence for two days this week at the Covid inquiry.

Although he removed the hat prior to giving evidence, the fact that he wore it on arrival was seen as a flippant affectation and disrespectful at such a serious event.

Mr Johnson did not play football as a pupil at Eton and has limited interest in the professional game, least of all the fortunes of Grimsby Town FC.

As far as is known, he has never attended a match at Blundell Park and, unless he springs a surprise, is not expected to be in the crowd at today’s home match when Crewe Alexandra are the visitors.
