RETAIL BOMBSHELL: HIGHLY POPULAR CLEETHORPES STORE SET TO CLOSE IN AUTUMN

ONE of the most popular stores in Cleethorpes is to close later this year.

Wilko is pulling out of its premises on St Peter's Avenue - probably in late summer or autumn.

It is one of 15 stores in England - including those in Scunthorpe, Skegness and Grantham - and Wales that have been slated for closure.

It is understood staff were being briefed today, and it is possible that opportunities will arise at its larger branch in Grimsby's Top Town.

The other doomed stores are:

* Shipley

* Stockton

* Bournemouth

* The Fort, Birmingham

* Leicester (Narborough Road)

* Redditch

* Rotherham

* Sutton Coldfield

* Edmonton Green

* Llanelli

* Merthyr Tydfil

It is understsood that Wilko has been unable to reach agreement with landlords over renewal of leases for  the affected stores.

Says Jerome Saint-Marc, Wilko's chief executive: "We will be doing everything we can to support affected staff.

"We apologise to customers but will continue to offer them everything they need in nearby stores or via wilko.com."
