A CONTROVERSIAL plan for a 14-home development off College Street in Grimsby has today been approved by North East Lincolnshire Council.

The planning committee heard there had been numerous objections, mostly on traffic safety and parking grounds, but members voted 7-3 in favour on the recommendation of case officers.

One of those to express concern was senior BBC sports journalist Matt Dean who lives in the vicinity and who was allowed to address the meeting.

Cllr Steve Beasant warned that visibility issues would create a problem for a cyclist seeking to exit the new development.

He supported a proposal from Cllr David Hasthorpe that the project should be deferred to allow safety issues to be further addressed.

Because trees and hedgerows will be lost, there will inevitably be a loss of biodiversity, but the committee was told that the site had been earmarked for housing.

Committee chairman Cllr Steve Harness expressed disappointment that no one from Truro-based Seven Developments (Grimsby) Ltd had attended the meeting to address neighbours' concerns.
