HIGH-SPEED MODEL POWERBOATS FRIGHTENED THE WITS OUT OF CLEETHORPES LAKE WILDLIFE

Great crested grebe with chicks - the species is a regular nester  in the country park

WATER birds were today making a cautious return to the lake in Cleethorpes Country Park.

The site is normally home to great crested grebes, mute swans, moorhens, mallard, herons, little egrets and gulls, but they flew off in collective panic on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday.

The cause of the scare?

Model powerboats were being 'exercised' at high speed across the length and breadth of  the water.

The action provided entertainment for many onlookers - but not for anglers and birders who could only look on in dismay.
