CLEETHORPES BARRIERS TO BE REMOVED IN RESPONSE TO LOW VIRUS INFECTION RATE

Back to the old days as council prepares to ditch concrete barriers in Cleethorpes

THE concrete barriers that have been present across key areas of Cleethorpes during summer are to be removed.

The barriers were installed to help people maintain social distance during the pandemic.

But given the low infection rate in the area, councillors and public health officials have decided to remove them in order to help the resort 'get back to normal'.

Says Cllr Stewart Swinburn, NELC's cabinet member for highways:  "It’s partly due to diligence of our community that the infection rate remains one of the lowest in the country.

“As a result, we feel it’s the right time for us to start to remove the barriers as people have started to take personal responsibility for social distancing.

"They understand the impact of their actions.”

The first barriers to be removed are those on Sea View Street, with traffic being allowed through again from tomorrow (Tuesday).

The remaining barriers on St Peter’s Avenue, Market Place and the North and Central Proms will be removed later this month once contractors with specialist lifting equipment can be hired.

Once removed, traffic flows will return to normal how they were pre-pandemic.

The barriers on Sea Road will remain to maintain the pedestrian walkway outside the old Waves site.

“We will keep the situation under review with our public health colleagues,” continues Cllr Swinburn.

“The virus hasn’t gone away and people need to continue to social distance as per the Government guidelines.”
