A PLAN to breathe new life into the former Conservative Club on Grimsby's Bargate has been refused.

The Co-op sought to invest £1.25-million in refurbishing the building - which has been empty for 14 years - to accommodate a convenience foodstore.

In size, it would be comparable to the Co-op on Cambridge Street, Grimsby, and slightly larger than the Tesco Express on Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby.

The project was welcomed by many nearby residents and would have created jobs.

But at this morning's meeting of of North East Lincolnshire Council's planning meeting, councillors voted 9-2 to refuse the application on the advice of highways officials who claimed the development would increase the risk of  traffic accidents.

It is understood, agents for the Co-op are prepared to appeal to an independent inspector for the committee's decision to be overturned.
