RATS ON THE RUN AS THEIR FAVOURITE CLEETHORPES SEAFRONT SHED IS DEMOLISHED

Rewind to earlier this winter - a rat spotted as it is about to enter the shed

AN old shed which provided a breeding habitat for Cleethorpes' seafront rats has been demolished and removed.

Earlier in winter, the Grimsby News revealed how the rodents were using the shed behind the beach safety offices on Central Promenade both to breed and as a base to run amok along the front.

But they have had to disperse to another site, or sites, after the shed was removed.

There is no guarantee they have travelled far afield because rats are still being sighted.

It is thought that one audacious family may even have set up home just a few feet away underneath a converted shipping container.

* According to experts, the UK's rat population has expanded by 30 million since lockdown, and there are now estimated to be 150 million - 2.2 for every person in the country. Highest densities are reckoned to be in London (20m), Birmingham (2.4m), Leeds (1.7m) and Glasgow (1.3m).

The shed - it is not known what purpose it  once served
