PLAN FOR NEW 'BIJOU' BAR ON CLEETHORPES SEAFRONT HITS THE BUFFERS

Located next to the library, the premises on Alexandra Road

PLANS for a new bar on Cleethorpes have been withdrawn.

Last year, local man Rob Bywater submitted an application to change the use of 26 Alexandra Road which, up until recently, had been a cafe.

His proposal was to specialise in "craft beers and locally sourced drinks".

It would have been relatively modest in scale,  accommodating, at maximum, no more than  about 25 customers, with opening hours no earlier than 11am and no later than 11pm.

There would have been no significant  alterations either to the interior or the exterior of the building.

The only alterations proposed were redecoration of the interior and installation of appropriate equipment and furniture such as fridges, beer pumps, tables and chairs.

However, the proposal was vehemently opposed by some half-a-dozen neighbours fearful of noise, drunkenness and other unwelcome issues.

In a letter to North East Lincolnshire Council, the occupant of a flat in nearby Cambridge Street wrote: " I have lived in Cleethorpes for several years and have been horrified at the number of pubs and bars that have arisen in the last few years.

"The tone of the town has gone down a great deal, and now it is filled with drunks urinating all over the place and vomiting.

"It is no longer  a fit place for families to visit for weekends or holidays.

"Indeed for the inhabitants who once enjoyed living here, it is now a nightmare.

" Litter, bad language and domestic violence is on the increase helped along by  the proliferation of bars.

"The main reason now to visit Cleethorpes is to get drunk, take drugs and to get into a fight.

"All these bars have encouraged lowering of standards in what used to be a decent seaside family resort.

"The attractive variety of shops have almost disappeared. Ones that had charm and character and good reputations.

"They have been pushed out by greedy people who aim to make this town nothing but a low down, drunken, filthy place for the low life to hang out and spoil it for the decent people."
