Second opportunity to bid via online auction for gold pocket watch presented to star Grimsby apprentice

A fine timepiece - the watch presented to Sydney Brewer

A SECOND chance beckons to bid at auction for an 18ct gold pocket watch with a Grimsby connection.

It failed to sell when it went under the hammer on Tuesday this week, but is now being sold by John Taylors of Louth via an online auction with bids closing soon after 1pm next Monday March 17.

Manufactured by J.W., Benson of London, the watch belonged to Sydney Charles Morton Brewer who, tragically, died in action in the 1914-18 war.

It had been presented to him on April 5, 1914, by the directors of the Grimsby Steam Fishing Company Ltd  in recognition of "ability and exemplary conduct" during his six-year apprenticeship.

The watch was withdrawn from sale on Tuesday after failing to meet its reserve price, but it is expected to find a buyer on Monday.

As of 5pm today, online bidding is said to have reached £2,500.
