Such is the collapse in the local population of the song thrush
that every sighting (such as this one on Cleethorpes foreshore nature reserve) needs to be cherished. Time was when this garden-loving species was widespread
throughout North East Lincolnshire, but it has now been lost to most parts of Cleethorpes and Grimsby where the total local population may be as few as 20 pairs. Causes
of the decline are well-known - increased residential and other development, loss of
hedgerow and other nesting habitat and intensive use of insecticides in gardens.
Earthworms are a favourite food of thrushes, so neither is the increasing replacement of
garden lawns with plastic grass doing them any favours.
