Most of the curlews that spend winter on the Humber Estuary's mud and sand have long flown to northern Scandinavia where they breed.
But this solitary bird has missed the flight.
On Friday afternoon, it was spotted on a school playing field off Taylors Avenue in Cleethorpes.
It was desperately trying to probe the ground with its long bill for earthworms, but to no avail.
Lack of rainfall meant the land was too hard to penetrate, and the bird probably went hungry.
The bird's stay at the academy was brief - the following day it had gone.
