Council determined to press ahead with Cleethorpes Market Place pedestrianisation despite protests

Following pedestrianisation of the Market Place, motorists will be urged to park either on the new site behind the Queen Vic pub or off High Street

IT looks like the proposed pedestrianisation of Cleethorpes Market Place will go ahead despite objections from  independent traders.

Says North East Lincolnshire Council's portfolio holder for highways, Cllr Stewart Swinburn: "The  project is in the final design stage.

"The intention is  to create an open, welcoming, pedestrian-friendly area for residents and visitors."

Of some traders' concerns about potential loss of custom, Cllr Swinburn says: "In the long term, we know that this scheme will benefit  businesses."

NELC is hopeful that compensation for loss of parking spaces in the market place will be provided by the nearby new  car park  at the rear of the Old Vic outside which a new traffic island has been constructed.

As from this Friday, the Victoria car park, as it has been named, will offer both long- and short-stay parking.

Meanwhile, High Street car park regulations are to be changed to short-stay parking only, with a maximum of two hours stay.

Blue Badge holders can still park for an unlimited time, but season tickets will no longer be valid.
