A 60-year-old  man has been heavily fined after being convicted of cycling in a pedestrianised section of Grimsby town centre.

Andrew Billingham was summonsed to appear before magistrates after he failed to pay a £100 fixed penalty notice for cycling in Victoria Street.

The defendant denied the offence, claiming he had dismounted, but the case was found proved.

A District Judge ordered him to pay £530 - £200 for the offence, costs of £250 and a surcharge of £80.

Afterwards, Cllr Ron Shepherd, North East Lincolnshire Council's  portfolio holder for safer environments, said: "This is a great result for our enforcement teams."

* Last year, a total of 85 people were fined for cycling in prohibited areas within the borough.
