Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue issues plea on football goal netting after entangled deer loses its life

Sadly this deer perished after becoming entangled in the net

A WARNING has been sounded that unattended netting can be fatal to wildlife.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue has sounded the alarm after a small deer died after having become entangled in  the netting of a garden  football goal.

This incident occurred in the village of Grasby, outside the borough, but, according to the charity, it is far from unusual.

Says a CWR spokesperson: "Unfortunately, the householders had been away on holiday.

"When they arrived home, they discovered the deer, a  Muntjac, wrapped tightly in the net.

"At the time of discovery they were unsure if the deer was still alive so called our rescue for help.

"Sadly on arrival, we confirmed that the deer had already passed away."

The residents were distraught and have agreed to allowing the photograph to be shared in the media to raise awareness of the peril posed by unattended netting.

According to CWR, incidents like this are "very common", and many animals, including foxes, badgers and birds, suffer severe injuries or even death, especially if they have been caught for a long time.

"If you have a similar net, please, please store it away when not in use."
