Plan unveiled to demolish ugly Osborne Street shops block to make way for Grimsby's new bus station

Once considered state-of-the-art, the Osborne Street block is unlikely to stand for much longer

A PLANNING application has been submitted for demolition of  the retail  units at 3-15 Osborne Street in Grimsby to make way for a new Grimsby bus station.

The units - which sit on a 1.6-acre site - were built in the second half of 1970s.

Most  have long been vacant, while the Haven Centre has relocated more recently.

Says a NELC spokesperson: "Stage One will essentially be a large, flat area co-locating all the bus shelters together."

Grant aid will be sought for an amenity  building as part of Stage Two.

Because the development will also accommodate  cycle racks and be close to the railway station, NELC are describing the project as a 'Transport Hub' which sounds grander than 'bus station'.

It is not yet known which demolition firm has secured the contract - or if one has yet been commissioned - but NELC says there will be an instruction "to minimise any waste that goes to landfill, to salvage brick and to recycle or re-use steelwork and concrete where possible."

No clues yet as to a proposed opening date nor the likely cost of the proposed development.
