Perks of being an MP are modest for Lia Nici and Martin Vickers - but somewhat larger for Johnson

One of the three has been laughing all the way to the bank - can you guess which one?

THREE donations totalling £18,000 have been reported by Grimsby MP Lia Nici in the latest Register of MPs' Interests.

The largest - £10,000 - came from Ian McVeigh - with £5,000  from Wynne Griffiths and £3,000 payment from Stephanie Lake.

Meanwhile Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers has revealed four freebie overseas trips for himself and his wife-secretary, Ann, since summer last year.

They were as follows:

* Lockheed Martin UK Ltd and CAE U.K. Plc footed the £387 bill for a July 25-28 visit to Monte Cassino to view military cemeteries and battlefields.

* The Gibraltar government paid for a fact-finding visit for the couple to Gibraltar (total value £2,450) between September 8-12 last year to mark the accession of King Charles.

* The British-Kosovar Chambers of Commerce forked out £748.16 Ltd for a visit to Kosovo to foster stronger business links between the UK and Kosovo (registered 20 December 2022)

* The General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises paid the estimated £2,226 costs of a visit to Casablana (11-14 April 2023) to promote  links and mutual understanding between Britain and Morocco.

However, these perks seem modest by comparison with the sums (below) that cascaded into the bank accounts of Boris Johnson who quit as an MP earlier this summer.

Mystery as proposal for 42-house development in Grimsby-area village is unexpectedly withdrawn

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme for a new housing development in a leafy Grimsby-area village has unexpectedly been withdrawn.

The proposal by Mr R. Baillie was for 42 detached homes, of various types, to be built on  a greenfield site off Waltham Road in Barnoldby-le-Beck.

However, it was opposed by both Barnoldby-le-Beck and Waltham parish council as well as by nearby residents, fearful about harm to the countryside character of the site, with further concerns about inadequate infrastructure and amenities.

It is not known for what reason  the application has been withdrawn nor whether it will be re-submitted in revised form at a later date.

Part of the boating lake in Cleethorpes was today cordoned after a gust of wind brought down one of the largest trees in the park. A crew from North East Lincolnshire Council was this morning pondering how to address the challenge of ensuring public safety is not put at risk.

Proposal to replace New Waltham fuel station with Asda convenience store runs out of road

Convenience store plan for fuel station has been withdrawn

A PROPOSAL for a Cleethorpes-area fuel station to be converted to an Asda-owned convenience store now looks unlikely to proceed.

Lacklustre trading at the Esso-selling garage at Waltham Toll Bar prompted its owners, EG Group, to submit an  application for change of use.

But it emerged this week that the planning application  had been withdrawn.

The premises currently has a modest grocery range under the Spar umbrella, but this would have been substantially extended  if conversion had gone ahead

According to a report by agents Montagu Evans, the EG Group had been prepared  to spend "in excess of £2.5-million in order to decommission the existing store in order to deliver an aesthetically pleasing replacement which would enhance the street scene in a prominent location".

Although petrol and diesel sales would have ceased, there would have been three EV charging points.

Currently the store has a workforce of 12, but this would have increased to about 20.

It is not known if the existing fuel station will continue to trade as at present or if another option might beckon.

No reason has been given for the change of mind.

Council in pledge to safeguard North East Lincolnshire's precious trees - and plant a few more

NORTH East Lincolnshire Council's cabinet has this week pledged not only to safeguard the borough's trees but also to increase the number which is currently well below the UK average.

At its meeting on  Wednesday, members rubberstamped the authority's first Tree Strategy.

A report states:  "The benefits of trees have long been acknowledged.

"Trees provide one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the environmental quality of an area, delivering physical, social, health and economic well-being as well as mitigating climate change, improving storm water management, air quality, biodiversity and visual amenity.

"We must work with all our partners to ensure that our tree canopy cover is not only maintained but increased to a level which allows us to mitigate the effects of climate change."

When the council conducted a consultation exercise with residents in August and September 2021,  97 per cent of the respondents wanted to see tree cover increased.

There is currently a UK national average of 15.8 per cent for canopy cover within our towns and cities, but in North East Lincolnshire, it is just 10.5 per cent.

The report continues: "A North East Lincolnshire Tree Strategy will demonstrate its commitment to caring for the trees under its management and increasing the number of trees in public places.

"It will be used as best practice to influence private landowners to look after their trees and encourage planting on their land and will set out the right approach to tree canopy aspirations for the borough.

"Our future approach will take the following direction:

* Understand our tree population, through surveys and record-keeping so that we have a good base of evidence for making improvements and tracking changes.

* Set targets for increasing canopy cover, and work towards achieving this whilst assuring that we get the right trees in the right places.

* Establish guidance for tree planting, which can be used both by the council and by those planting trees on their own land. This guidance will take into account the need for species diversity and the need to plan for future climate changes. Particular focus will be given to how we can successfully plant trees in hard landscapes.

* Support the development of community woodlands and work towards sustainable and successful implementation of these projects.

* Engage with our community on aspects of tree planting and management to achieve buy-in and active collaboration.

"The council will use its powers to prevent unnecessary damage to trees within all construction/development."

The report adds: "The council will seek compensation from any external organisation responsible for significant damage to or removal of any council-owned tree(s)."

Can she make it? Yes she can! Adventurer takes to the rocks on Cleethorpes seafront

If I watch my step, I should be OK

Rock climbing on the whale's tail in Cleethorpes is not to be encouraged.

Very much the reverse given the instability of some of the rocks.

Undeterred, this adventurer took the risk - and completed her personal challenge.

Keeping my balance - that's the hard bit

Mission accomplished! Master (or should that be mistress?) of all she surveys

Two Grimsby legal firms - John Barkers and Michael Culshaw - confirm they have merged

TWO law firms in Grimsby have merged.

It was announced today that long-established John Barkers Solicitors has acquired a much younger firm, Michael Culshaw & Co Solicitors.

Established in 1884, the former prides itself on providing a range of legal services including family law, property law, personal injury and will-writing.

The acquisition of Michael Culshaw - a regular presence at Grimsby Magistrates' Court - will beef up its criminal law wing.

In a statement, John Barker director Jonathan Stones says: "We are thrilled to welcome the talented team of Michael Culshaw & Co into the John Barkers family.

"We are committed to providing exceptional representation and this merger further reinforces our dedication to serving the community.

"This strategic merger strengthens John Barkers' commitment to providing exceptional legal services and further solidifies its position as a leading legal practice in Grimsby and the surrounding areas."

No corresponding statement has been issued by Michael Culshaw, and it is not known what will become of its premises in Victoria Street, Grimsby.

Former public conveniences on North Promenade, Cleethorpes, to be converted to cafe/bar

Conversion works will have to be put on hold if roosting or breeding bats are discovered

AN abandoned public conveniences block on Cleethorpes seafront is to be converted to a cafe/bar.

Grimsby firm Premier Window Systems has this week secured planning permission from North East Lincolnshire Council to convert the disused building on North Promenade.

The proposal also involves creating manager's accommodation, with balconies,  on the first and second floors

A statement from Premier's agents says: "The existing public toilet block was closed by the local authority in 2006 and sold for redevelopment.

"The application seeks permission for the site to be redeveloped which will include publicly accessible toilets being restored in this location again."

It continues:  "It is proposed that the cafe/bar will be open for extended hours to cater for the increased activity at this end of the resort.

"Leisure activity has increased over recent years to include early morning / late afternoon swimming, paddle boarding, beach exercise groups, running, walking and cycling."

The application did not go before the council's planning officer was determined under delegated powers by case officer Bethany Loring who comments: "The proposal will bring significant regeneration benefits and employment opportunities.

"Increased activity in this part of Cleethorpes will increase the footfall along North Promenade which, in turn, will benefit the vitality of existing businesses and the overall resort."

Because the site backs on to the railway, Network Rail have insisted on being updated on construction plans so as to safeguard their land and  infrastructure.

Following an ecology consultant's survey, no evidence of bat activity was recorded, but there is a cautionary note.

"Bats can occupy the smallest of spaces which cannot easily be inspected.

"It is recommended that all contractors are warned of the possibility of finding bats and informed that they must stop work at once if they see bats or suspect that they are present."

It is not yet known when work will start on the refurbishment nor what name will be chosen for the cafe/bar.

Planners refuse scheme for 80 houses to be built on greenfield site in Humberston

Whitethroat - one of the warbler species at risk should the site be given over to housing

A PROPOSAL to build up to 80 more houses on land south of Persimmon's  Millennium Park development in Humberston  has been turned down by North East Lincolnshire Council.

Members of the authority's planning committee shared the view of officers that the scheme, off Humberston Avenue, would have a detrimental impact on the open  countryside and wildlife - the site is currently scrubland and grass rich in songbirds, wildflowers and more.

The committee noted that the village council and many nearby residents had objected.

However, this may not be the end of the matter, if the applicants - Messrs S and M Hewson - choose to submit an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

Green and leafy site saved - at least for the time being

Restaurant project for former bank building in Cleethorpes given the planning green light

The planning green light has this week been given  by North East Lincolnshire Council planners for the former Barclays Bank building on High Street, Cleethorpes, to become a restaurant-cum-takeaway. A condition has been imposed that sound installation must be imposed for the benefit of neighbours.

Chicken city! Proposed poultry project in Grimsby-area village could house up to 64,000 laying hens

Population of humans in Healing could be outstripped by egg-laying hens if project is approved

AS many as 64,000 egg-laying hens could be housed on farmland outside Healing if planners give the green light.

Sir Richard Sutton Estates have applied  to build a giant poultry unit on land at Wells Farm off Wells Road on the outskirts of the village as an 'agricultural diversification initiative'.

Say the agents: "The building would be subdivided into four bird housing sections, together with a central area for egg packing and storage.

"The central packing area would include an automated egg packer and an egg storage area.

"The proposed bird housing areas include a multi-tier system, which includes rows of tiered perches, which are situated over manure belts.

"The designated bird areas include automated chain feeders and non-drip nipple drinkers.

"Following laying, the eggs roll from the nest box on to the conveyor which delivers them to the packing area."

What about the welfare and happiness of the hens?

Computer-controlled ventilation fans would be installed and 'pop holes', automatically-operated between 8am and dusk, would provide the birds with free access to an external pasture surrounded by trees.

Here they would be able to scratch for insects and stretch their legs and wings

The report continues: "The use of the development will be for the accommodation of free-range laying hens.

"The proposed development will operate in accordance with the British Egg Industry Councils Lion Code of Practice and in accordance with the RSPCA Freedom Foods charter.

"The bird would be purchased at point of lay (17 weeks) and delivered to the site.

"The birds would be  accommodated within the free-range egg unit for 70 weeks, following which they are to be removed and replaced."

If approved, the operation will require will require four  full-time staff  as well as generating work for delivery drivers.

The site will also require quarterly visits from both vets and farm assurance inspectors.

The application is currently under consideration by planners at North East Lincolnshire Council.

The Grimsby News says: "It is good that the hens will have somewhere to stretch their leg and wings, but the project still seems exploitative. Presumably, after 87 weeks, the hens will be culled, hopefully using a  pain-free method. What will happen to the corpses? Something not pleasing to dwell on.

'allo, 'allo, 'allo! Merseyside police arrive on Cleethorpes seafront to pursue their inquiries

Police officers from the west of the country swapped views of the Mersey with views of the Humber when they came calling in Cleethorpes today - apparently in a mission to track down drug dealers. No further information is known.

Soon be time for a spin - giant wheel arrives in Cleethorpes for Armed Forces Weekend

As Cleethorpes prepares for Armed Forces Weekend, a popular attraction has arrived - the Giant Wheel. This year, it is being installed near the site of the proposed new lifeboathouse on  Central Promenade. A small crowd gathered this evening to watch the magnificent structure being raised from the ground.
