The existing hotel has 84 bedrooms but there is a demand for more |
THERE has been a vote of confidence for Cleethorpes this week with Premier Inn's announcement of a proposed expansion of its hotel on King's Road.
The existing hotel accommodates 84 bedrooms and an an adjoining Brewers Fayre restaurant which is believed to have closed to the public last year.
The new proposal is for this restaurant to be demolished to make way for a new two-storey block containing 32 bedrooms and a limited-menu eating place, plus bar, for guests only.
The planning application submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council is accompanied by a landscaping scheme and biodiversity notes indicating how birds and other wildlife will be safeguarded.
As it happens, the Cleethorpes Premier Inn is already popular with birders from various parts of Britain, both because of its proximity to the Humber Estuary, a globally-important haven for shore birds, and because it overlooks the Buck Beck site of Local Wildlife Interest, thus providing glimpses of wetland birds such as Little Egrets, Grey Wagtails, Reed Warblers, Kingfishers and occasionally hunting Barn Owls.
The project aims to be as energy-efficient as possible with solar panels to be mounted on the roof.
It will not have gone unnoticed by Premier Inn bosses that, up the road, there is a longstanding plan for two hotels as part of a controversial proposal to redevelop the former Pleasure Island theme park.
Both applications could be determined as soon as this summer.
The application fee payable to NELC for the Premier Inn project is understood to be £6,358
