Project could result in thousands of end-of-life tyres being processed in Grimsby rather than India

A PROJECT earmarked for Grimsby could result in 25,000 tonnes worth of end-of-life tyres being processed locally rather than exported to under-developed countries.

A firm called Fluid Ice Family Office Ltd has set its sights on developing land off Energy Park Way for a pyrolysis plant.

The pyrolysis process involves shredding the tyres, then heating and melting the rubber to produce oil, gas and solid projects such as steel and carbon black which all have commercial applications.

The managers and owners of Fluid Ice already have a similar, fully functioning 20,000-tonne per annum throughput plant in Poland.

The process of pyrolysis was first developed on a commercial scale for the treatment of a range of municipal solid wastes and sewage sludge.

In a report, the firm states: "The UK creates more than 50 million waste tyres per annum, and there  is a need to deal with them.

"At present, the UK is the largest exporter of used  tyres in the world (primarily to India).

"Pyrolysis offers an opportunity to deal with tyre waste in a much more sustainable manner than many of the existing technologies and represents a better environmental option than incineration or landfilling of waste tyres.

"The proposed plant will process nearly 25,000 tonnes of ELT tyres."

No formal planning application has yet been submitted, but the company has submitted a brief outline of its proposals to North East Lincolnshire Council.

The authority is keen to know as much as possible about employment-generating potential, plus the likely impact on air quality and traffic movements.

Noise and smell might also be considerations that need to be addressed.
