We'll drink to that! Councillors' go-ahead for new canopy to be installed outside popular seafront pub

THE planning green light has been given for a new permanent canopy to be installed outside the front of Willys pub and brewery on Cleethorpes seafront.

North East Lincolnshire Council's heritage officer, Louise Jennings, was uncomfortable with the  proposal, fearing an unsympathetic impact on the facade of the property whose owner is long-serving Haverstoe ward councillor Bill Parkinson.

The heritage officer suggested a retractable roof would be preferable.

But members of NELC's planning committee did not share her misgivings when they discussed proposal at this week's meeting.

In the next day or two, Cllr Parkinson will receive a letter with the news that he wanted to hear.

It states:  "It is not thought the proposal will  harm the area's character or residential and local amenity.

"It is acceptable under all planning considerations including heritage."

Further on in the letter, NELC gives itself a pat on the back.

It continues: "The council has worked in a positive and proactive manner with the applicant to seek solutions to problems arising by discussing the concerns raised by the heritage officer." 

A condition has been imposed that "no demolition or construction work shall be carried out on or before 8am or after 6pm  Mondays to Fridays inclusive, before 8am or after 1pm  on Saturdays and at any time on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

"This is to ensure no disturbance during these hours to nearby residents."
